On Saturday, December 17th, 2016 I had the pleasure to sit with Pickwick Commons and Old Poet to discuss the new split album and some of the behind the scenes moments that you don't see on stage!
Q: So, what is your band name about?
A: John (Old Poet)- We really just thought the old name was starting to sound stupid and this was the coolest thing I could thing of.
A: Colin (Pickwick Commons)- Thats actually a funny story!
A: Adam (Pickwick Commons)- It was where our original bassist lived with his family.
Q: Adam, can you explain the reasoning for you taking over and not looking for a new vocalist?
A: Adam - We had a tour coming up that we weren't going to cancel and Brandon recommended some kid named Colin. We had trouble finding people to get behind and I didn't really know Colin well, he was also better at guitar. It came down to why don't we just get him for guitar and I can take over vocals for now.
Q: Tell us some stories from tour!
A: John - In Missouri when we were loading in, Jacob was trying to be funny and he sh*t his pants!
A: Colin - On my first tour with them we had an off day and we went out for food and our bassist decided to get sea food at a very bad tourist trap... on the next day something happened and he sh*t his pants.
"He threw out his jeans entirely... I would have washed them! $30 is $30" -Colin
Q: I learned pants or toilet paper are the most important tour items. What else would you recommend to bring on tour?
A: John - I have two ear plugs and wet wipes.
A: Adam - A book, I cannot talk to these people the whole time.
A: Colin - I have two essential items ear plugs and LOTS of clean underwear
"Oooh Sink Showers" -Colin
"Yeah, sink showers because you are not going to find many showers" -John
Q: Do you guys have intentions of having a split tour for the release of the split
A: Adam - That's actually being announced after this interview!
Q: With the new album will there be any new merch?
A: PC - We will have new cds, tour posters, stickers and tote bags.
A: OP - We have patches on the way and have a few other options that we haven't decided in yet.
Q: What made you guys have such and intense genre change?
A: John - It was mainly because metalcore is over played and it was becoming hard to stand out in a scene where everyone is playing the same thing.
A: Adam - It definitely had to do with Colin, because he was writing metalcore from a hardcore standpoint. I said okay, well I can write hardcore from a metalcore standpoint and you can definitely hear that on the older music we wrote together.
A: Colin - The genre change was probably prompted when I joined, because I was a hardcore kid.
Q: In the bands who writes the lyrics the most?
A: John - Jon writes about 80% of the lyrics then the rest of us add on and help tweak it.
A: Adam - We collaborate a lot. Colin writes all the songs about self harm and I write the ones about not harming yourself, that's basically true for the split. For every song though it really just boils down to self improvement.
Q: What is the craziest thing to happen during a set you played.
A: John - 8 years ago in an old band I saw someone get punched in the face so hard it literally mutilated his jaw!
A: Adam - One time Colin decided to go ham. He picked up a trash can, started spinning it around throwing trash everywhere!
"Like 0% of jaw structure was there" -John
Q: Can you explain what the writing process is like?
A: John - Lyrically, we were trying to do more story telling from an outside prospective instead of the lyrics being from experiences. Corey comes up with like 80% of the guitar work done and we just add to it.
A: Adam - Our's starts with a demo than everyone critiquing. Brandon lives like a half hour away so a lot of the writing is also us sending him recordings and him adding drums.
Q: So why a split?
A: Colin - It's because at one point I auditioned for bass in Old Poet and got the part. Instead of telling them I can't I just blew them off... So the split is because I'm sorry.
Q: What's your favorite track to play and favorite to listen to?
A: John - My favorite song to play is probably "Hemlock". My favorite from your side is probably the single.
A: Adam - My favorites on our side are the single and "Grey World". My favorite of Old Poet's is probably "Hemlock".
A: Colin - My favorite on their is probably Sold short. My favorite song to play live will probably be Blind because the breakdown.
Q: What's your favorite episode of It's Always Sunny?
A: John - Mine has to be "Chardee Macdennis: The Game of Games".
A: Adam - I love the Christmas special where Frank crawls out of the couch!
A: Colin- Mine has to be "The Gang Finds a Dumpster Baby"
Pickwick Commons are going tour with Old Poet to promote their new split! The tour starts on the 30th at the half marathon house. The show is a canned food drive so make sure you come and give some cans for a good cause!
