Singer and songwriter, Dylan Gardner, has been turning heads and catching the attention of many the past few years. From his 2014 hit, ‘Let’s Get Started’, to his brand new single, ‘Hit Me With The Lights Out’, Gardner has created masterpieces that shine in the music industry.
In addition to his original music, Gardner is known for making incredible and unique covers for his YouTube channel. Gardner’s cover of ‘Sweet Creature’, originally by Harry Styles, is one that I can’t stop telling my friends about. While I already enjoyed the song, his voice and special twist he put on the song really melted my heart. Gardner’s voice is truly astounding and his Rolodex of covers show the diversity and versatility of not only his taste in music, but his talent.
Recently, I was able to speak with Gardner and ask him a few questions I was dying to know the answers to.
Q:How did this all begin for you/when did you get involved with music?
A: I was born a son of a musician and record store owner, so music was inevitably part of my DNA since I could speak. I always dreamed of being a songwriter/musician. I started singing and recording the songs I was writing in my room when I was about 14 and started releasing them soon after. I made my first album "Adventures in Real Time" independently and uploaded it to Spotify in 2014 and it all really started after that. Now I record and tour all the time and I just finished working on a brand new album coming soon!
Q:The Beatles seem to be an obvious inspiration; did you have any others?
A:Yes! Vampire Weekend, Ben Folds, Elliott Smith, Stevie Wonder, and Brian Wilson to name a few! I just love their perspectives as songwriters and the world they transport you to when you're listening to them. I'm an avid record collector and I constantly dig through bins for new music.
Q:What's something you wish you could say to your younger self?
A:Never stop looking out for yourself and never assume someone else will do the work for you. Biggest lesson in the music industry working with major labels that I've learned.
Q:Do you have anything you're particularly excited about that you'll be working on or releasing soon?
A:Oh yes I do! My new album "Almost Real" is finished and slated for release TBA. I just put out a brand new single "Hit Me With The Lights Out" which is the second song released from the album. More fun stuff to come!
Q:Most, if not all, of your covers have a special and unique spin on them that only your videos seem to have. What's the process like when creating a cover of yours?
A:The process starts once I decide to cover a song, I stop listening to it completely. I want to make the cover as unique as possible and I want to latch on to one particularly special thing about the song. For example, "Diane Young" I latched on to the chaotic energy, or "These Heaux" I latched on to the emotion in the first two lines of the chorus.
Q:What's something you're most proud of when it comes to your music and career as a musician?
A:I'm most proud of the fact that people say my music can color their world for a minute, like on a train ride home or out with friends. It's a special feeling to hear about someone listening with their heart and soul to something you created. It's really what keeps me going regardless of what success the music has.
Q:When maintaining the music, YouTube, and variety of social media, what is the, or a, message you want to convey to your fans?
A:The message I want to convey to my fans is to lose yourself in music and find the happiness to be found in a great song, because it really does make life better. I try to put my inner most feelings into every song I write and I just want people to connect with a tune to the point where they go somewhere in their head every time they hear those opening seconds...
As I previously mentioned, Gardner has really created something amazing. His music is something I can put on and totally transform my day. His music is a staple in my daily playlists. I highly suggest finding him on iTunes or Spotify and adding him to your playlist.
